Pigmentation
Pigmentation
Pigmentation disorders are caused when there is an overproduction or an underproduction of melanin in the skin, this is called hyper or hypo-pigmentation. Hypopigmentation refers to an abnormally low amount of melanin in areas in the skin.
Hyperpigmentation refers to abnormally high levels of melanin deposits concentrated in an area of the skin giving it an uneven blotchy appearance. It can be superficial pigmentation, deposited at the epidermal layer of the skin or deep in the dermal layer. Dermal pigmentation is more difficult to treat and can require a multifaceted approach.
