Ageing Skin
Ageing Skin
“Healthy skin is a reflection of overall wellness” Dr. Murad
Skin changes are among the most visible signs of ageing, typically characterised by wrinkling, loss of elasticity, laxity, volume loss and textural changes.
Skin ageing is induced by both intrinsic and external factors. Intrinsic ageing is an inevitable physiological process that results in thin, dry skin, fine lines and wrinkles and gradual dermal atrophy. External ageing is a result of external environmental factors such as pollution, smoking, poor nutrition and sun exposure.
The ageing process involves changes in skin cells as well as structural and functional changes in the extracellular matrix components such as collagen and elastin.
What are the causes and triggers of Ageing Skin?
Sun exposure
Genetic predisposition
Smoking
Alcohol
Toxins
Poor nutrition
Dehydration
Inflammaging (chronic low-grade inflammation occurring in the absence of overt infection)
Stress
Oxidative stress from free radicals
What happens during the ageing process?
Textural changes in the skin, it becomes rougher in appearance
Skin laxity, the loss of elastin in the skin causes it to become looser
The outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, thins and becomes more translucent
Loss of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid
Skin becomes more fragile and bruises easily due to thinner blood vessels
Benign, cancerous or pigmented lesions can develop
Sebaceous glands produce less oil as we age, resulting in dryness
Loss of subcutaneous fat between your skin and muscle results in loss of volume and skin laxity, especially seen at the temples, forehead and over the cheekbones. Gravity pulls on these diminishing fat pads and we start to notice more prominent smile lines, jowls and early double chin.
Bone loss, over the age of 35 the number of bone regenerating cells in the face decreases. These changes result in a diminished bone scaffold on which our fat and skin sit. Our tissues become too large for their underlying bones and wrinkles and folds become more evident.
Cartilage loss in the nose causes drooping of the nasal tip and accentuation of the bony structures in the nose.
