Eczema
Eczema/Atopic Dermatitis
Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes the skin to become dry, itchy and irritated, to the point where it may even weep and bleed. There are a number of different types of Eczema but the term that is most often used is Atopic Eczema or Atopic Dermatitis.
This condition is essentially a defect in the skin barrier with a genetic basis. When the skin barrier is impaired the skin becomes dry and more vulnerable to infections from microorganisms like bacteria etc.
The symptoms of Eczema/Atopic Dermatitis can vary with age. It commonly occurs in infancy and childhood, a small percentage of those who develop it in childhood will continue to experience troublesome symptoms as an adult the rest will outgrow it, although they may always have dry sensitive skin.

What are the causes and triggers of Eczema?
While the definitive cause is, as yet, unknown, it is believed to be due to a combination of genetic and environmental variables. Factors that are thought to be important in its development include:
Genetic predisposition
Inflammatory and allergy responses
Frequently occurs in conjunction with hay fever and asthma
Allergens
Climate
Smoking
Alcohol
Stress
Toxins
Microbes/infections
Hormonal changes
Poor nutrition
